Avoiding failure

Being positive is so important. But knowing where you are likely to fail is a really good backstop. By all means look on the bright side and hope for the best. But knowing what might trip you up and thus being able to avoid these situations is a great idea.

If you are following something like the CORE program and you stick to it rigidly, your chances of failing are greatly reduced. But just in case, learn about what are known as relapse triggers.

This is so important because you are not quitting drinking alcohol for a week, a month or a year. You are quitting drinking alcohol forever. One drink could bring you undone. One drink could lead to two or more and then your solid gains might be lost. So a stitch in time saves nine. Prevention is better than cure. Learn about your relapse triggers.

The usual culprits are going to places where alcohol is freely available, going to events where you used to drink and meeting people who were once your drinking buddies. Avoid these places and people.

Then there are the thoughts you might have. You could be alone at home and have these thoughts. You picture in your mind a glass of cold beer. It’s a hot day and you’re thirsty. These are relapse triggers and the best way is to [a] have no alcohol available where you are and [b] use the knowledge of the two types of brain and take control of your booze brain. Put it back in its place.
